Brief Description
Aadhaar is a 12-digit identification number for Indian residents, similar to how people in the US have a social security number. In the process of attaining an Aadhaar number, residents provide large sums of information, and the resulting Aadhaar cards now serve several legal purposes including acting as drivers licenses, passports, and ATM cards. In 2017 and 2018, Aadhaar suffered a series of data breaches exposing the information of over 1 billion people. This 2023 report providing in-depth discussion about these data breaches was the final result of a semester-long research project from Library and Information Studies 510: Human Factors in Information Security. The goal of the incident report is to inform readers about the Aadhaar data breach and to provide a starting point for preventing this issue in the future.
